Willingboro Township Police
Recently the Willingboro Police Department set up a "Seatbelt Checkpoint" on Rancocas Road just East of Rockland Drive. We recognize the holiday season as a particularly busy time of year and traditionally see more traffic on the roads as well as an increase in aggressive driving and car accidents.
Traffic was reduced to one lane and every fifth vehicle was stopped and directed into the Sportsman’s Field parking lot where officers waited to check to make sure everyone in the vehicle was seat belted properly. Those drivers who were not properly secured were asked to do so and were sent on their way with a verbal warning. Those drivers who were already in compliance were rewarded with coupons for free food provided by our friends at Taco Bell and Ruby Tuesdays or gift cards from Target. Drivers that had small children in their vehicles that were not secured in a car seat were given a brand new car seat provided by Triple A. The checkpoint itself was the brainchild of Director Gregory Rucker and Cheri Fodor of the Willingboro Police Patrol Division. Small children in the cars were also given "Police are our Friends" wristbands and/or necklaces to help promote positive relations with the police department.
Ultimately, all unsecured drivers and vehicle occupants that passed through the checkpoint exited in safer condition than when they entered it. In light of the holidays, no tickets were issued to anyone.
The following officers participated in the detail:
Officer John Michener
Officer James Manson
Officer Monica Podraza
Special Officer Joe Dey
