DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A PLAN!

  • Get together with your family and create a communications plan ahead of time. This will help you and your family to connect as quickly and easily as possible after the storm.
  • Keep a written record of all important phone numbers.
  • Designate an individual outside of the state to serve as a family point of contact. (After a disaster it is often easier to call out-of-state than within the affected area.)
  • Make sure that all family members know who this person is and how to contact them.
  • After a disaster or evacuation, all family members should make contact with the designated individual. Try choosing a certain time for everyone to check in.

Natural Disasters and Severe Weather Preparedness

CERT

Community Emergency Response Teams, or CERT, is a concept developed in 1985 by the Los Angeles Fire Department. They recognized that their citizens would very likely be on their own during the early stages of a disaster. Accordingly, the LAFD decided that some basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills would improve the citizens’ ability to survive until emergency personnel could arrive. CERT trains people to help themselves, their families and their neighbors. In addition, CERT teams were created to provide a vital service in the absence of emergency responders. Today more than most states, and foreign countries have instituted a CERT System. Willingboro’s CERT team was the first in Burlington County and has assisted in many events in the township and the county.

If you are interested in training please email, burlcooem@co.burlington.nj.us. Training is free, and while there is no obligation to join a team after your training, Willingboro CERT hopes you will join them.

CIVICREADY

CivicReady is a cloud-based mass notification system that empowers local governments to communicate routine information and emergencies to residents quickly and effectively. Willingboro utilizes this system. You can join CivicReady by clicking here to sign up.
